Alice Elric was born as the second child to Hoenheim and Trisha Elric. She was born one year after her older brother, Edward. However, Alice never really got a chance to know her father, since he left before she could even walk. Edward never forgave Hoenheim for this, but Alice was able to. For about ten years, Alice, Edward, and Trisha lived together in happiness.
Alice, going by Al (a nickame given to her by Ed), and Ed managed to teach themselves alchemy at a young age and studied hard to make their mother smile. However, when she was nine, Trisha became ill and died. Not long after Trisha's death, Ed and Al promised that they would find a way using alchemy to bring her back. They found a teacher named Izumi Curtis and after they thought they had learned enough, they left, returning home to attempt to bring Trisha back.
However, something went wrong and Edward lost his whole body and Alice part of her left leg to the Gate. Since Alice didn't want to lose the only family she had left, she sacrificed her right arm in order to bind Ed's soul to a suit of armor.
After the failed attempt at human transmutation and meeting Lt. Colonel Roy Mustang, Alice got an automail leg and arm and promised to join the military as a State Alchemist in order to restore both Edward's body and her own. After recovering, Ed and Al burned down their house, leaving them with one choice, to move forward since they had no place to go back to.
In order to study for the State Alchemy test, Al and Ed were sent to Shou Tucker, the Sewing Life Alchemist and his four-year-old daughter Nina. They studied hard and at the age of 11, Alice became the youngest State Alchemist ever. During the test, she had found out that she had the ability to perform alchemy without a circle. Edward never finished the test because trying to explain why he had no body would be rather hard.
Not long after becoming a State Alchemist, Al was given the title of "FullMetal". It wasn't long after becoming a state alchemist when Shou Tucker decided to use alchemy to combine his daughter and their dog in order to create a talking chimera. Al and Ed find out about this and Tucker is arrested and Nina was taken away. Not wanting Nina to be some sort of experiment for the Military, Al uses her alchemy to free her from their grasp.
A few days later, Al decides to return her pocket watch, when Winry decides to come to central to visit. However, while examining a refrigerated truck, Winry is kidnapped by a serial killer and Al goes to find her. The kidnapper turns out to be Barry the Chopper, who would eventually become famous for his killings. After saving Winry and Al from Barry, Ed tells Al about the Philosopher's stone, something that would let them bypass the law of equivalent exchange
After making up her mind again, Al decided to remain a state alchemist. Her first official assignment took her to the town of Youswell, where she was supposed to inspect the coal mines. She ended up liberating it from the corrupt Lieutenant Yoki, who had been putting high taxes on the people.
After finishing her assignment in Youswell, Al and Ed ventured to Lior, following a rumor that there was a Philosopher's Stone there. It turned out to be a fake, the Priest Cornello was using it to make the people of Lior think that he was creating miracles. Together Ed and Al were able to show the people that Cornello was a fake before leaving to continue their search.
After leaving Lior, Al and Ed stop in Aquroya, a city in the middle of a manhunt for the Phantom Thief Psiren. They end up getting caught up in it, and after catching Psiren, she gives them a tip. She tells them about people researching Red Water in Xenotime, a town not too far from Aquroya.
After leaving Aquroya, Al and Ed head to Xenotime, where they find out about two brothers who were impersonating them in order to continue their father's research. The two brothers were Russell and Fletcher Tringham, the sons of Nash Tringham who had researched Red Water in Central. Mugear, the man sponsoring the research knows that the 'Elrics' that are doing research in his house aren't the real ones and after Al and Ed show up, they are locked up in the basement. Mugear decides to put his 'contingency plan' into effect, and the Tringham brothers decide to ask the real Elrics for help. They defeat Mugear and get rid of the red water.
Finally Al and Ed make it to East City, where Alice gives her report to Colonel Mustang. While there, she asks about a Doctor Marcoh, a doctor that had saved some of the children in Xenotime from the affects of the Red Water. Roy doesn't tell her anything and in order to gain more information as well as renew her State Alchemy Certification, she decides to fight him in an alchemy battle.
After the fight, Al and Ed go to track down Dr. Marcoh, who had been in hiding since the Ishbal Rebellion. After tracking him down, they try to get information from him, but before they could, General Gran, the Iron Blood Alchemist, shows up to take Marcoh into his custody. The sudden appearance of a man known as Scar, complicates things.
Scar kills General Gran and goes after Marcoh and Al, forcing them to run. Scar continues to chase them, determined to kill both Marcoh and Al because they are State Alchemists. While running, Marcoh explains the reasons behind the Ishbal Rebellion. Eventually, Al and Ed fight Scar, doing what they can to protect each other and Marcoh.
Something goes wrong however. Scar's right arm has part of an alchemy matrix tattooed on it and he manages to use it to destroy part of Ed's armor and Al's arm, rendering them useless in a fight. It is during this fight that Al is brought to Econtra.
